Biography

Dr Avelino Parajón

Avelino Parajón studied Medicine and Surgery at Universidad Complutense in Madrid and carried out the Doctorate at Universidad Autónoma in the same city.

He was formed as neurosurgeon by the MIR system at University Hospital Puerta de Hierro in Madrid between 1996 and 2001; he later extended his training through many courses in reference centers in Europe and the United States including a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery at the Weill Cornell University - Presbyterian Hospital New York.

He dedicates an important part of his professional activity for many years ago to teaching and research as tutor of neurosurgery residents at University Hospital Puerta de Hierro between 2006 and 2013, head of spinal-surgery training for neurosurgeons for Spain (Education Neuro Officer) of the international society of Spinal Neurosurgery AOSpine between 2011 and 2013, delegate in the Training Committee of the European Neurosurgery Society (EANS Training Committee) from 2011 and Clinical Collaborator Teacher of the Neurosurgery department at Universidad Autónoma in Madrid from 2002.

From 2011 is a guest teacher at the Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery courses in Weill Cornell University in New York and teacher at the training courses of spinal surgery in the Neurosurgery American Society (Congress of Neurological Surgeons- CNS), as the only Spanish neurosurgeon invited as teacher by this Society in the last years.

He is a member of the Neurosurgery Spanish Society, the European Neurosurgery Society, the American Neurosurgery Society, the Spanish Neurorraquis and teacher in the Spinal-surgeons International Society AOSpine.

He is chartered of the Official School of Doctors of Madrid and registered in the General Medical Council of United Kingdom (GMC UK) with neurosurgeon license (Fully registered with license to practice, Neurosurgeon).

He has been taking part as researcher in different national and international projects in the following fields: brain tumors treatment, sealing materials in skull-base surgery, medullar regeneration with stem cells in traumatic injury and material development for spinal osteosynthesis.

He worked as neurosurgeon at the University Hospital Puerta de Hierro in Madrid from 2001, and he is Head of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Ramón y Cajal of the Madrid Health Service from 2014 , selected by public competition. He is also Head of Neurosurgery at La Milagrosa Hospital where he practices private medicine.
